The goal of our Summer School is to challenge young scientists to learn more about science in an adventurous and playful way. This year’s International Summer School is located at ‘Primary School De Spiegel', not far from UWC primary school in Maastricht from July 8th up to July 11th.
Summer School topics
We’ve developed several programs for the Mad Science Summer School. This year’s program for the International Summer School is the ‘Mad Camp’ program. Read more about the contents of this program below.
Learn about molecules and atoms and how they attach or split up in a chemical reaction. To feel temperatures change or to see something change color is very exciting, but of course it’s the best thing ever when your chemical reaction results in slime and putty. You’re even allowed to take all of it home!
Are you ready for an absolutely electrifying experience? Prepare for static electricity, electric circuits and other experiments that require courageous volunteers. All the knowledge you’ll gain about electricity will be put to good use while you’re making your very own light sabre to take home!
Ecology & Biology:
Today you’ll work as ecologists and biologists. You’ll get theoretic information about insects, which we’ll then put into practice when we go outside to look for these creepy crawlies. You’ll learn about the best ways to take care of and protect our environment, including our animals and our oceans. You’ll even get to create your own mini ecosystem to take care of at home.
Which forces keep you grounded on our Earth and which forces do we experience in our daily lives? Today is all about gravity, air pressure, magnetism and other fundamental forces. You’ll learn about professor Newton’s laws through various experiments. One includes a ride on Newton’s rocket car!
What are the costs?
The admission fee for the International Summer School is €135.00
Prices for other locations may vary. This is due to varying rent prices for some locations or because of additional amenities that a particular location offers.
Mad Science is well aware of the utmost importance of safety, which is why our Summer School staff consists of professional Mad Science teachers. Each group is assigned two teachers, with the maximum size of a group being 24 children. As the children will be participating in a lot of group activities, teamspirit is very important. Proper supervision will ensure that the children will have an absolutely amazing time while at the same time making sure that the parents have nothing to worry about.
Teachers may be forced to decide to adjust or cancel some activities. For instance, it isn’t safe to do a rocket launch in case of stormy weather, and in case of rain, we’ll have to replace outdoor activities with indoor activities. The teachers will make the necessary adjustments in such a way that the program will still be fun and exciting

When the International Summer School is fully booked, we will inform you of this on our website. There is also a possibility that there have been too few registrations to actually host the International Summer School. In that case, it’s possible to have the child(ren) participate during another Summer School week (Please do take into account that this will not be an International Summer School, but a Dutch Summer School). Another possibility is to cancel, in which case the admission fee you paid will be refunded.
Food and drinks
Nutritious meals and snacks are very important during an active Summer School week. Therefore, please ensure your child brings along proper lunch. Drinks and snacks will be provided by the Summer School.
Drop off & Pick up
Getting your child(ren) from and to Summer School is every customer’s own responsibility. The participants can be dropped off 30 minutes in advance of the start of each day’s program and can be picked up until 30 minutes after the end of said program.
Should you be late repeatedly, Mad Science will be forced to demand financial compensation, since our Mad Science teachers have to stay at the Summer School location until every child has been picked up.
Should participants behave inappropriately, they will be addressed by the Summer School staff. Several rules are in place to ensure that the children behave in an appropriate manner. Should a child disregard these rules, we’ll contact the parents to help us find a solution for the problem. In case the inappropriate behavior continues, Mad Science has the right to end the participation immediately, in which case the admission fee will be refunded proportionally to the number of days the child will no longer participate.
